Units

The Ripon Police Department strives to reach the highest professional standards in California. Authorized for 27 sworn positions, and 4 community service officers, the Department encourages officers to actively enforce state and local laws while remaining responsive to the needs of the community.

Under the general supervision of the Chief of Police, officers are responsible for enforcement of state and local ordinances, preventative patrol, traffic enforcement, investigative assignments and performs other duties as assigned. In addition, opportunities exist for training and special assignments after successful completion of a probationary period.

Special assignment positions may include:

  • Haz-Mat Specialist
  • Field Training Officer
  • School Resource Officer

The City of Ripon has a newly adopted GAP program. Qualified Officers can receive a low-interest city assisted loan towards the purchase of a home in Ripon Up to $10,000.00 may be forgiven.

take home carOfficers who choose to live within the city limits are assigned their own police unit to take home. Officers are encouraged to drive their units in town during off duty hours.

 

computerEvery patrol unit is equipped with an AR-15, Benelli semi-auto shotgun, remote activated mobile video unit, mobile radar, night vision, range finder, digital camera for evidence collection, mobile computer, and many other hi-tech devices to aid officers in their law enforcement duties. Two Artic Cat ATVs are available for off road patrol. ZAP patrol bikes are available for bike patrol during special events and during regular patrol as time permits.

Qualifications

Completion of high school or equivalent, proof of completion of P.O.S.T. Basic Academy and possess valid California Drivers License required. Supplemental college course work and ability to type desirable. Knowledge of police methods and procedures with the ability to implement such knowledge. Applicants considered for employment must satisfactorily pass a physical and psychological examination process. Standard vision of 20/100 uncorrected, correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. Must satisfactorily pass a background screening. Must be eligible to work in the United States and live within a 25 mile radius of the Ripon City Hall after hiring.

Under direction, the Dispatcher receives and transmits requests for assistance, dispatches personnel and equipment, maintains records, performs such other duties as maybe required.

Qualifications

Requires education equivalent to graduation from high school. One year of clerical experience or satisfactory of specialized clerical courses. Experience or training as a police dispatcher is desirable but not required. Knowledge of modern office equipment and procedures; operation of computer equipment and data entry; police and emergency operations and activities. Ability to speak clearly, distinctly and grammatically correct; carry out written and verbal instructions; keep clear and accurate records; work under stress; work for prolonged periods in small areas; deal effectively with the public in routine as well as stressful situations; work varying shifts; type at a minimum speed of 45 WPM; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Applicants considered for employment must satisfactorily pass a physical examination at City expense, and are cautioned not to quit or give notice to present employers until they qualify on the medical examination. Under the general supervision of the Communications/Community Services Supervisor, the CSO assists in traffic control, writes parking citations, handles some clerical duties, collects data and completes reports, and coordinates and implements crime prevention programs. A major function of the CSO consists of Animal Control duties, including maintenance of the facility and animals, and euthanasia.

Qualifications

Requires education equivalent to graduation from high school. Some college is desirable. Knowledge of basic law enforcement principles, procedures and terminology is required. Ability to learn and apply laws, codes and regulations, accurately maintain records and files, develop programs and prepare reports. Ability to perform clerical duties involving accuracy, and independent judgment is essential. Understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimum supervision. Deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Applicants considered for employment must pass a physical exam by the City. Possession of a valid California driver's license. Must be eligible to work in the United States and live within a 25 mile radius of the Ripon City Hall after hiring.

The Ripon Police Department Reserve Unit was established to supplement and assist regular sworn police officers in their duties. This unit provides professional, sworn volunteer reserve officers who can augment regular staffing levels. All applicants shall be required to meet and pass the same pre-employment procedures as regular police officers before appointment. An applicant must have completed a POST approved basic academy or possess a POST Level I Reserve Officer Certificate.

Duties typically include street patrol, conducting preliminary police investigations, report writing, traffic control, issuance of citations, and other basic law enforcement functions. Assignments of reserve officers will usually be to augment the Operations Division but they may be assigned to other areas within the Department as needed. Reserve Officers are required to work during maximum deployment assignments such as: Almond Blossom Festival, 4th of July, major disasters, or major events.

Reserve officers are required to complete a service commitment of 20 hours per month. Reserve Officers may be compensated for assigned hours exceeding their service commitment, not to exceed 30 hrs. per week.
